The Guardsman tells the story of George Barnewall, an American expatriate who travels to France in 1870 and finds himself charged with guarding an important artifact while trying to survive in a hostile and dangerous new world dominated by the brutal Prussians.\nBarnewall is actually only interested in getting out fast as his contract was for Valentine\'s day and he doesn\'t want to be caught by his former boss who holds him responsible for the fiasco.\nLike Les Miserables and all classic French Literature (its actually on there) the opening pages promise slow paced tragedy with lots of detail until you reach page 50 and it\'s bombing, romance, ruthlessness, and the utter abandonment of any semblance of decency which the main character has shown thus far.\nMuch about this book relays back to old French stories with their knights and chivalry and midnight trips to mount guard – this time, however, it draws its inspirations from the urban underbelly in France during the Franco-Prussian War.\nBecause of its political content and the author\'s background this is not an easy read, but it is exhaustively researched which gives it enormous value. If you are even tangentially interested in the period, this is an essential read.\n
