Emma Hewitt has never travelled that far before, and certainly not for the purpose of finding a husband. However, the town she was sent to meet her fiancee is all the way in Oregon, and there's no backing out now. The sad part is that Emma has nobody who she can turn to for advice, except for her two brothers. She never had many friends, being the shy and gentle small-town girl that she was, but now it seems like she is even more isolated than before. Naturally, her fears of being surrounded by people she does not know unite, as she hates everyone in town for being stuck-up and snobby. Emma had always admired Nathan Reed since childhood, when he used to work on their wagon-train.

Although they were strictly boyhood friends, Emma thinks back about what an awesome person Nathan was. Now, after the bold fever ends, they will finally have the chance to speak and tell each other how they feel.
