The author's journey to the coast was a treacherous one, having spent time living in places she could not connect with, or those in which she felt too at home. Even a trip to Montana, where she befriended animals and survived with a basket of scraps, left her feeling confined there: "So many things you need to talk about, but if you don't you'll never get through to anyone, because everything you say falls on deaf ears," Mansfield explained. "There's nowhere like France for a writer, either, all my friends are there."
