Karel Capek was born in Malá Strana, Prague, to the family of Serbian immigrants and originally known as Josef Capek. His father, Václav Cervenka, owned a shoe factory and helped Karel to learn Slovak grammar, which contrasted with the Czech grammar he learned at school. When Karel entered Prague University, he began writing radio plays about topics including Nazism and Communism. Along the way, Karel met and fell in love with Olga Jordanova, an actress he had starred in some shows alongside. In 1938, Karel took a position working in cultural development at the British Embassy to Prague. Just before World War II started, he and Olga got married and eventually had two children—a daughter named Marie-Aubrayne and a son named Andrew-Ivanoff. Often, he involved himself in intellectual circles speaking works from Russian literature, such as Pushkin and Chekhov.

Upon invading the Soviet Union, Nazi forces entered and hierarchy-protecting his family forced them into a maximum concentration camp at Terezín. Following two years living apart from his wife, Karel eventually learned that he could not inquire about his son due to gruesome circumstances. After the war, Karel immigrated to Sweden and signed a book deal with Alenius and Wijkmark to publish Menší próza. He then went on to much success as a writer, receiveing several Nobel Prize nominations, and influencing generations of both Czech and Lithuanian writers.
