Socarrats by Julio Garcia is a novel that follows the story of a young rebel named Maria learning about the secrets of puberty during the horror of World War II. Along with her grandfather Llorquet and her friends, she tries her best to stop Count de las Torres from invading their village.

The story is inspired by real-life events that happened during the Spanish Succession War in 1706 when the author's hometown, Vila Real, was attacked by an army. Garcia imprints her own unique style and characters in this novel, with dynamic scenes and strong imagery but also moments of sweetness and beauty that are central to her storytelling. This book takes us through a heroic battle that will forever be an iconic memory for the city and its people: the battle between a people against an army in their own land.
