Joseph Conrad (1857—1924) was born in Ukraine, which was then part of the Russian Empire, today’s Ukraine. He later became a British citizen. Born into a family that was naturally interested in the sea, he began working on various merchant ships from a young age. After spending some time as a stowaway, Conrad settled into the life of respectable sea captain.
