Iny Lorentz' novel Licht in den Wolfen gives us the story of Rieke Hartmann, daughter of a German officer wounded during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. She is locked in a crosschenge with Theodore, son of her friend Gunda and his brother Theodore. Gunda himself is engaged to marry Rieken but his father disapproves of the marriage and stipulates that he must have Teddy go to the Franco-German war. This conflict and its aftermath would have probably been tragic however the beauty of Hussein's characters win out and a romance develops between the two young people before the break.
This story and others like it and Bose's student days provide insight into those times before World War One; they provide a climax to that period in history and would also lead on excitingly to the coming cataclysms of revolution and tragedy. It is a story as much driven by circumstance as it is by character.
