"Namibia – The Difficult Years" by Helmut Laußke is a novel that follows a group of namibian doctors and nurses during a period of immense hardship caused by the violent revolution that broke out in Namibia after a brutal civil war.

The novel is set in the Bandundu hospital, a fictional, all-white hospital in southeastern Namibia in the early 1980s. More specifically, the novel focuses on operations performed by a band of American medical professionals (Elizabeth Darnell, Dave McVicar, Jack Wiseman) who unknowingly brought World War III to the area.

During one particularly dramatic moment of violence, Lizette, the most junior member of their team, fears for her life. None of those present expect the hospital, under siege by fighters, to hold out to an anticipated 3 months, and have decided to evacuate the women and children to safety elsewhere, including
