The Book of Curses (Unabridged) (H. G. Wells).

I was introduced to H.G.Wells when I was a child by my mother reading his short story “The Invisible Man” that had caused a wave of frightening imaginations in us at the time. His book “The Book of Curses” reminded me of it, the story is much darker and unsettling. The setting of the book is in Victorian England, where a coven of witches among the upper classes conducts their devilish rituals with the hope of bending the fate of the people of the city and possibly bring forth some kind of apocalypse.

One of them is a mortal woman whom they entrust the supreme role in the coven to succeed the deceased old lady who had lead the circle for years and years. Despite the warnings from her college friends, she breaks away from their peer pressure to join their circle and dedicates herself to serving the corrupt magical practices. She soon discovers that the true extent of their powers exceeds beyond only spells.

The stories in the book are all interconnected as each character struggles in their own way in order to survive or their given situation while exposing the corruption amidst what seemed to be the Victorian town. Some of the characters include
