Zapotlan tells the story of Aguilar Flores, an elderly woman who was born in Mexico City and who has just moved to Florida for the first time in her life - with her dark secret close at hand.
Flores is a woman "full of secrets" who lives in a small fishing town in Southwest Florida. The novel describes her simple life, fraught with contradictions and pain, in familiar but never satisfying terms. Aguilar has a very sad, tragic and painful past, which she is taking with her to her new environment, although she does not fully comprehend why. Flores has lived a life marked by devastating losses - her husband is dead, she has lost her daughter, her grandchildren have abandoned her and now her oldest grandson, the son she cared for most, is also being estranged from her. Yet somehow she manages to come to terms with this pain, adapting as best she can, finding a way to survive. While Aguilar's story is fascinating and deeply plotted by Jimenez, Zapotlan also confronts readers with difficult ethical questions, touching on issues of adulthood, inheritance law, family obligation and loss. This vocally communicated story unflinchingly tackles gender roles, power dynamics within kinship networks, intergenerational conflicts, cultural nostalgia and most recent social shifts occasioned by the fall of communism. The novella follows different characters and takes place over several years, enabling Aguilar through transition, yet it is written with crisp lyricism that allows its pages to drip or breeze or, as a rearranger in an opera might say, "seal the edge". Closed sentences lead into or out of scenes; one sentence string of alliteration may serve to set a mood, lead us trailing along behind a speaker through a landscape, and when it cuts we hear that person's footsteps dying away. To cite the cinematographic example provided simply in the complexities of music itself likely stresses how close Johnson/Jimenez get to this heightened degree of communication in English prose - or, more specifically, how Jimenez bridges a stream of consciousness story that uses rich and comprehensive direct language with literal rtiction to rewrite real-word world with the vigor and anddeo of a large-scale film, ala the films he so loves. In short, it's a balancing act that may just land you crossing the threshold from novel to poetry.
