The contributors to this volume were drawn from varied origins primarily in the UK and sub-Saharan Africa, but with contributions from Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Madagascar and the United States among others. They are diverse scholars and activists working across the social sciences and humanities who occupy a loosely defined gathering zone of disciplines that have nurtured their methodological curiosity on the periphery of 'traditional' disciplines. The common thread linking these individuals is that they hold large commitments to interdisciplinary enquiry which offers critical engagement with on-going processes of contestation both within and across fields such as development studies, public policy, cultural studies and political economy. Rather than propose neatly neat frameworks, as many other Social Science Studies (SSS) volumes have tended to do, they aspire to take advantage of flexible modes of analysis that sufficiently acknowlege heterogeneity within, and as well as between, specific contexts and analytically useful closed loops of interrelation between different spatial, historical, economic, cultural and political dimensions, the work through these close to complete emerged in relation to life histories undertaken alongside longstanding trajectories of work at the Societies at Risk Programme, University of East Anglia culminating in the discipline-building and seminar-based MA courses that became the core central experimental environment for precise investigation of various forms of contemporary political unrest towards Martial Law, Decolonisation, Transitional Justice and Homeland nationalism at the School of Culture, Society and Language, The Open University.
