This Historical Survey presents the first serious scholarly treatment of the enormous complex that was the changing dynamics of economic, cultural, social and political relations between the Mediterranean Hellenistic states and their Continental counterpart from the Roman Republic to the Feudal Age.
This volume examines from an interdisciplinary Realist perspective the period of Roman expansion across the eastern Mediterranean, concluding with the consolidation of Roman overlordship over the entire Greek world from the Adriate to Syria in the 170s BCE. Applying insights from modern, realist international theory into the ancient Mediterranean world, it offers an analysis of the Roman strategies in this critical phase of Roman Mediterranean politics, drawing upon dramatic intensification of military provocations and responses from the Greek polis world. It focuses on the shared harsh realities of state interaction under anarchic conditions, illustrating both Hellenistic and Roman conduct in this time period. In so doing, it asks how general concepts of war on modern political science might be applied to insights into ancient international relationships. Delving into the protracted crisis that shattered the Greco-Roman world in the final decade of the 3rd century BCE.
