Reading the Eighteenth Century Novel takes place between 1700 C.E. and 1830 C. E. It deals with the development of the genre of the novel among a range of significant works and writers. This book explores many important issues arguments connected with developments within the historical context of its time and the effect of such novels on the society they are part of.The book begins by exploring the "rise in novel" in the centuries which set the turf for the times described in this book and then surveys various theories of explanations of the same. In the next few chapters a selection of ten novels, starting with Oroonoco and writing on to reworks like Moll Flander, Tom Jones, and even Emma. Each of these novels not only gives an exquisite instantiation of certain forms and styles of writing but also stages discussion points pertaining to various forms of discussions of the narrative at large. Beside this detailed examination of individual works an insight was taken into how these works (and genres, as a whole) were changing through the course of eighteenth, what role new genres played in this change, was partially discussed. Besides this, the influences without words of novels on various institutions (like ideals of nobility and feminism), in fields (such as looking at nationalism and examining how "other" nationalities were written), as well as social contexts (an example being the lives devotees interested in formalized exercises) have been deeply analyzed.
