This book is part A.of the two volume series entitled "Amino Acid metabolism", published by the Academic Press for the Society for Biochemistry Research. The topics covered are dealt with comprehensively, covering (i) the function and properties of amino acids, (ii) enzymes of the system, with particular reference to amino-peptidase, sarcosine dehydratase, alanine transaminase, aspartate transcarbamoylase and arbutine oxidase, (iii) control mechanisms in the biosythesis and degradation of ten amino acids (leucine, theneaine, valine, isoleucine, lysine, arginine, glycine. Alanine, methionine and histidine), (iv) regulatory mechanisms for blood levels of these amino acids in adults, e.g. adaptation to starvation and pregnancy, therapy with vita.-Mineral supplements, and other factors, and (v) regulatory mechanisms between milk and blood in response to protein intake.
