This volume is an attempt to elucidate the existence, development, and purposes of this chapel. Among the sources from which it derives are three rare period newspapers (Los Angeles Star, Theropauli Chronicle, Mission Hillary), an extensive set of manuscripts in the Geology Library of Stanford, a single copy of Spainling's History and Description of Los Angeles, Carmel, Montolobo, Montebello, San Juan Capistrano and Newport.-Carmel area, two broadsides; of unidentified authors, one of no known location, and four official listings.-A family segment of the manuscript narrative is substantial and valuable, and I have given it a place in Part Second of the present work, as obviously complementing the compilation of which others have hitherto made; among the several numbers brought forward for publication here are walk-by jottings of Comendador Agostino Fresia, July 28th., 1775; another of Lieutenant Felipe de Neve, August 6th., same year; and two of Victoriaia Flores, November 27th., 3rd year of Her Excellency Arcensaª Josefa de Cordova's Voyage.
