Georg Hermann's "Rosenemil" is one of his most famous and important novels. Set shortly after the turn of the 20th century in the Berlin milieu filled with thieves, pickpockets, and prostitutes, Emil is called "Rosen" for his passion for flowers, and earns a meager living as a representative of trivia. But his world changes when he meets Polen Liese, a known prostitute under the name Lissi Morning. Liese brings her into the underground world of Berlin and becomes his protector. As a thief taking advantage of new criminal opportunities, Emils rises to fame, and soon must face up to a set of ethical dilemmas that mirror his work as an insurance investigator. Although his life shifts in a bleak direction as a Diamond named Lydia gains the favor of Berlin's better society and Ema loses her protector, Hermann has learned how to craft a realistic and humanist take on both the rich hustling of society and the struggles of its members. His characterizations of the darker underbelly are something of a naturalistic take from the works of Hauptman and Doblom, making his portrayal an exciting and enlightening read that pays attention to the intricacies of era in which he writes.
