Роман польского писателя Генрика Сенкевича "Камо грядеши" (лат. "Quo Vadis") рассказывает о жизни первых христиан в Древнем Риме. Действие происходит в 64 году н.э. при императоре Нероне.

Главный герой - молодой патриций Марк Виниций влюбляется в красавицу Лигию, которая оказывается христианкой. Лигия живет вместе с другими христианами, среди которых апостол Петр. Марк Виниций пытается силой завоевать любовь Лигии, но терпит неудачу.

Тем временем в Риме нарастают гонения на христиан. Жестокий император Нерон обвиняет их в поджоге Рима и устраивает массовые казни. Лигия попадает в руки Нерона, и Виниций пытается её спасти.

В финале Виниций сам принимает христианство, поражённый мужеством Лигии и других христиан, которые идут на смерть, но не отрекаются от своей веры.

Книга Сенкевича - это захватывающий исторический роман о любви на фоне борьбы язычества и христианства в Древнем Риме. Автор мастерски передает атмосферу эпохи и психологию людей того времени.

«Quo Vadis» is a Polish novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz, first published in serialised form between 1895–96 and revised in book form in 1905. Set in the Roman Empire during the reigns of the bloody emperor Nero and his moronic predecessor Galba, in AD 64, it tells the story of Roman legionary Primus in his patrol of an imperial highway in Judea as it becomes the scene of events as daunting and terrifying as the last days of Pompeii under the fires of Vesuvius. In its original form it follows the decimation of the Third Century BC Cohort XVII under the command of Julius Caesar's son Gaius Julius Caesar Germanicus, as the cohort is massacred simply for being following their orders, then cycles the imaginary route of a single Roman Legionary named Primus through first-person narrative, along highways torn asunder by a seething and frenzied populace mixed with a massive Jewish revolt against Rome and Christianity, forcibly growing from a few early followers in Judaea (who are also repeatedly insulted by primitive tribal Roman practices performed without a thought for history or even nature) to become one of the essential foundations for the capitalist western world, given it a fundamentally pagan bent among the traditional Old Testament dogmas of Moses and more modern developments conceived by one manan essentially Christianity.
