Garry Disher's "Hinterhalt" has some familiar settings, but stylistically it is original, entertaining, and occasionally thought-provoking.\nIt begins with protagonist Rob Regan an miserable ex-con in foggy, Glasgow prison who, on cornering his old boss (the book's villain) himself ends up dead.\nPaging Scoop McLusky his confidant but in absentia friend kicks off the Hitchcockian tangents-within-a-novel detailed above.\nDougal MacLean, the new editor at \'Black Cap\' swings in from pages of black humour, the women are an equally subversive delight and not just because they're entirely invented.\nThey function with vitality reminiscent of Ian Rankin\'s heroines.\nIn the event it all spirals round to Rob\'s search for the true but evasive snake-in-the-grass way of our skillful foils, Florrie and a murder in the Caledonian porridge pose for both sauce and spoon.\nA mystery resolved ultimately makes your head spin.\nBut I won\'t give it away, and you won\' wait for publication back in January next to see if you can work it out all the way through instead, like me.\nIf you like Glasgow-set crime thrillers, along the lines of Lenny McKinlay or Hugh MacRobert, then "Hinterhalt", at 247pp, will warrant a skimmer or two.\nAnd if the rich variety of talents that have been amassed in Glasgow\'s punishingly tight churn at Kimberley, Ingram and Maclehose is what you want, then this effort, while knee-high, reminds you yet again of where its apples came from.\nThough it must be confessed, as the end was near, at one point I did wonder who\'d written this… Very nearly there was a discussion about it.\nTSR.\nHarold Penny.\n
