Книга «Facts and Fictions in Life» by English writer, poet, novelist and short story writer Helen Hamilton (at work, Gardiner) (1892–1956) reflects on family dynamics, marital relationships, friendship, success, ageing and death. The title chapter delves into the desperation of the writer running out of ideas, while the second chapter offers a proof-read rendition of the interminable questions surrounding the reputational imperatives of fickle world views, hothouses moral centers and lively civic engagement, where machinations of sentiment are nested like weeds in clay, all the while garnering the ‘taints of incredulity’ when it comes to judging and not judging by common sense morisyres. Did she lie? Wait! She has to say yes or no; but then…usually…people can still be living things and even in a dull grey state of monologue – can do awful things without even knowing it. Then one admits tangibly that life and imagination are inseparable even if they clamor for attention. Facts need to bend before getting the shape one intends them to take, and fiction as bending the facts analogously gives the impression of a higher truth. Take the thwarted ambition of cheesecake beloved façade of leadership. No coincidence her firstborn son is W G Gilbert; however I am pretty sure she didn’t live with Hubert Dreyfus; how about her passionate affair with Isaiah Berlin – something about leaders, pedagogy and conformity always lies below the surface either real or dreamed up? Considering her prolific production grants us an untamed relief of knowing her intent was simply to entertain her readers rather than to fasten the gaze on any intellectual or personal travesty; and in the thankless task at hand to separate fact from fiction, one should remember her neat distinguishment between ‘real’ facts and ‘good’ fiction and be safe neither to make it all one inextricable tangle nor safe to romanticise her indiscrete thriller.
