«The Little Match Girl's Oil of Vitriol» («The Little Girl with the Green Jars», «The Refined Metal Bottle») is an admirable tale about a young girl who falls in love with metallic glasses and forgets about her family and her vocation in order to make money taking them.
Using glassblowers' hand cues, Sætre draws magical scenes comprising tiny swapper forever immersed whilst hard and watching their salvation drawing ever farther away, as wickedly poignant at times. Her wording is skillful around conveying viscerally vivid specificities yet keeps enough engrossing for you to linger on her work in each photo whilst also finding this story compelling. You struggle to understand why the girl feels she must acquire these glasses especially as the only reward they deliver is miss fortune for that particular girl. Yes, it's a sad story but there's actually respect for this poor desperate girl—what other option was there for her really? She didn't start off in such awful circumstances; thus we feel sympathy for her. And the story does the job of instilling a dark notion about the trap that money can snare one self in. Grab somebody and they debase their very being and turning it into something insignificant and worthless. It's just world replete with human greed where a girl would throw her vocation aside for what could be so easily obtained. Through the gaze of miniature bottles and pans Vika Sætre injects emotion and resonates a note of distress that ensure contemplation and discussion.
