Read by the Cleared title: "Two Wars:An Autobiographical Memoir of the Services of Samuel Gibbs French." This work, published in 1890 after its appearance as a serial in The Army and Navy Journal, gives a history of the author, an American officer of British descent, and his military career during the out wars and the Cuban insurrections. French served during the Mexican war at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, from May to June 1847, commanding a brigade, and receiving praise from a famous historian and Indian fighter. In the war of 1812 he served in Massachusetts, where he fought at Freeport. Subsequently he lived in Washington for ten years before returning to his native Kentucky where he attained his highest rank as Colonel and received a Direc-tor's Certificate from Fort Sill, Oklahoma in February 1873. He then spent six months on extended leave before rejoining the army headed to Cuba in October 1885 for three months, assisting in the suppression of a rebellion. Six months later he joined forces with the Spanish female army to quell another uprising. After two years, in October 1637, he was recalled to Fort Myer, Virginia where he stayed as Commandant until August 1518, when he was retired further to his home. Appendices containing te drawings of various medals and decorations, as well as some notes and portrait, accompany the text.
