The Island of Enchantment by Forman, Justus Miles Covers the lives of the natives who inhabited Mauritius, the exotic southern island in the Indian Ocean at the east of Madagascar, from the earliest human settlement to its European occupation and enslavement of the indigenous people known as 'Creoles' in the 17th century under the Portuguese and the Dutch. Creole civilization declined after the devastating pestilence known as yellow fever in 1802.
