Roman "The Grand Inquisitor" by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a stunning fantasy tale about the return of Christ to Spain during the Inquisition. The protagonist, the atheist Ivan, is faced with a paradox: Christ wanted to free people from their bondages, but it means acknowledging His own defeats and coming up against unchangeable reality. Against that background Dostoevsky explores philosophy of tolerance. The reasoning of the spiritual leader of the Inquisition, the silence of Jesus and the response of Ivan's brother are still very pertinent to contemporary debates on faith, ethics and politics.
