It's the story of Philip Marlowe and the dissolute and reckless women, snobbish heiresses and a neglected beauty forgotten at the altar whom he meets as he investigates a dame's disappearance in `Venice, Los Angeles' on the wild Lemonjean cruise, a peripatetic floating la Belle Époque analogous to the William Catullus voyage down the Tiber in 14BCE. As Marlowe, Fitzgerald is a wry irreverent narrator, skilfully merging the usual screwball premise with deep insights into the character of Marlowe himself, with JB Priestley no doubt influencing the narration through his scenarios for 'The Odd Couple' (surprising as it sounds for an Ice Age melodrama impenetrable to the cinema). Likewise you get distinct impressions of Fitzgerald himself through Marlowe's insightful baritone meditations that are something of a microcosm of the witty, hilarious and self-deprecating screeds Fitzgerald would spew himself in interviews of his own.
