Rebecca Langton has asked me to review the forthcoming novel from Eve Devon, titled The Wedding Planner. This is a romantic comedy with a wholehearted message that just so happens to be perfect for the turn of the year as several weddings are organised. Here's a tentative summary of the delights that it promises:
Single mom Gloria Paveys negative dispositions tend to bring negative consequences for her and those around her, not the least being the family friend Emma Wollenbrand's announcement that she's getting married. There's only one way to rescue herself from parental humiliation, shame-worthy posturing, and belt out haplessly the untimely right thing - putting herself forward for the position of Emma's wedding planner!
Gloria's close-knit circle of friends gleefully connive and persuade her to accept the engagement simultaneously risking backfiring exacerbates Gloria's predicament. Really? She's going to get to sort out male grooms and female guests careered properly with hands-on £31.69 per hour rate? For as long as she pays up? And Seth, Gloria's old flame? Well, heart is heart but there's still that taut ban hanging over both their heads. Could this wedding disaster capitalize on Gloria's experiences?
Falling in with such an unlikely team allows for an unexpected scope of glimpses into relationships not always present in the best of marriages. Pure escapism and feelings-goodiness complete with plenty of sunshine, flowers and fairy-tale malarkey. At the heart of it, The Wedding Planner could well be the lovely-ending romance that Gloria needs and Emma deserves, galvanizing her love for genders and her commitment to helping others see it shine through.
