"Za doliną róż" - это новелла, основанная на событиях во время русско-турецкой войны и участии поляков, сынов крестьян, которых призывали в армию. В этой войне погибает сын главного героя, крестьянина с Вислы, по имени Казик. Действие новеллы разворачивается на протяжении нескольких месяцев, возможно, даже нескольких лет. Рассказчица-героиня сначала узнает историю жизни около шестидесятилетнего крестьянина, который, несмотря на раннюю потерю жены, сохранил определенную радость жизни и воспитал несколько детей в одиночку. Eliza Orzeszkowa's novel, Beyond the Valley of Roses, concerns itself with the events of the Russian-Turkish war and the participation in that war of Polish peasants' sons drafted into the army. Of course, in this war, Kazio, the protagonist's son, dies. The action of the story takes place over the course of about sixteen months or perhaps more than a few years. Kazio's mother dies early on in the novel and the protagonist father manages to raise six children single-handedly, though he loses hope that at least one of his daughters would survive him. His greatest hope is placed in his eldest son, Kazik, who was to remain behind, inherit the family home, and run the estate. However, Kazik unintentionally volunteers for military service and is sent off to battle in Turkey, where he perishes. The protagonist's inability to come to terms with his son's death stems, at least in part, from his harrowing ignorance of where his remains are buried.
