Eleanor Jones' A HOME FOR HER BABY is set in Ireland against a background of the fishing industry. It examines the complex emotions and relationships that occur when a disturbing tragedy involving someone close leads to heartbreak and unexpected turnarounds. The hero, fisherman Tom, loses his older and caring brother, who had been married to the fisherwoman he loved, but they had an abusive relationship, had left the marriage and remained legally separate. Ali, the younger fisherwoman, was thought to be the wife of Tom's brother. She says she became romantically involved with Tom when the womanizing brother separated from her and they were in a bad state of mind. However, it transpires later on that Ali was not even married.
In addition to having to deal with the loss of their loved one, Ali and Tom have to contend with business-related challenges that may or may not be contributing factors to the untimely death of Brother Roberts. In Tom's case he has to choose between a career in fishing (he owns and operates a vessel) over living close to where his grieving family lives (now consisting only of his daughter and himself). Alison's story requires that she and her sister move into their home and try to make ends meet, or maybe quit their jobs and head somewhere else for work. Both careers, as well as deciding to keep and give up baby, require her to reevaluate her current life position. "It's enough to ruin a person's life", she declares.
Knowing about the deceased Roberts' history of abuse toward his wife, someone who never enjoyed the fiery and unpredictable man's company, perhaps the reader will feel sympathy for Tom and Alison and forgive them for any problems they are facing right now. Eleanor Jones blends all the elements together and brings them to life with bright storytelling.
