In this book, John Stewart Mill explains his philosophy of liberty in order to determine which moral principles should be applied in the development of a healthy society. Though highly revered in its time, On Liberty has been highly criticised due to its uneven harmonization with utilitarian values and its lack of clarity in addressing the limits of freedom in the public sphere. However, despite its criticisms, many other philosophers, particularly those concerned with political questions, have found inspiration in many of Mill's ideas contained within On Liberty.
