These volumes contain the celebrated war letters of Stephen Crane, the literary force behind the Great Road in western New York State in the years before the Civil War. Eating into his vision of a disintegrated society comes a nature-mended man, an extended version of the journey-encounter texts long embraced and rewritten by the 1960s Beat generation and their intellectual kin. Divided into two sections, we first have "The Little Regiment," a diary trying to understand the differences and reasons for the Union War effort, considered insular by many around the nation, a chronicle extending roughly from August 1861 to May 1862. In the second section, "Other Episodes of the Civil War," we find directory entries as Crane gets closer to the Western theater in June 1863 along with a variety of incidentals, observations, coronaries, preliminary sketches or extracts from autobiographical material, though usually in fragmented narrative form. Interestingly, even the most conventional diary-entries recall Vico's claim that everything requires history in order to be completely comprehensible.
