The Ciba Foundation Symposium continues its long association by publishing in this series proceedings of its colloquia, now held every four years by the Novartis Research Foundation of Switzerland. Papers presented in these symposia are historical documents recording discussions on biological, chemical and medicinal fields among a distinguished worldwide group of scientists. Contributions in the series have represented an inestimable service to the knowledge community, both at the local and international levels. While some of them have been previously published novels, others are in the form of preprints, and still others have never before been made available to scientific literature. All have come to light at diverse stages of a long history of scientifical relationships between Ciba and The Foundation.
