Better Crops for food is an excellent summary of technological improvements to crops and livestock suitable for food production but doesn't offer significant amounts of new material. It is undoubtedly aimed at the non-specialist reader and undoubtedly helps spread the word about the process of making better food, what big science is capable of and, more importantly, why this might substantially be uneconomic for future sectors during rapid population growth and the developing plight in the Third World. It'll form part of every scientist's library and I look forward to reading some of these proceedings very soon.
