Christian Lent's "Kinder des Atomes" is a novel based on the author's own experiences as a German nuclear physics student in the 1980's and early 1990's. The story begins with protagonist Michael Zahn returning to his homeland in North-Western Germany to investigate an eco-activist plan to sabotage one of the region's nuclear power plants. Michael is fresh out of college and eager to make a name for himself as an agent for the British intelligence agency MI6.
However, as Michael finds himself entangled in a power struggle with hard-line eco-terrorists in the region, he is faced with the reality of his own career and past traumas. His job is not just protecting the public's safety, but also becoming disillusioned by the bureaucracy and inhibitions of his career path. Despite the challenges, Michael remains determined to finish this investigation and uncover the truth behind the attack, amidst his growing personal crises.
