The story covers the life of Kate Delacorte (Kate Delacorte is the name of actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler) and suitor Roy London, Kate's fiancé and also her good friend who, although initially appalled at romance with Roy, felt Jerry Baker, Roy's cousin that was responsible for Kate being unable to finish college, was now terminally ill. The novel consists of three parts made up of chapters, each of which has a chapter heading designating the date: "August 9", "September 7" and "October 1"; while multiple smaller sub-chapters break each chapter up.
