The book takes us into a curious family's struggle to find their inheritance amid the vast search for themselves. On a frigid winter afternoon, Frauke, her brother Falk, and their sister Gesche are gathered at their notorious spot of "prohibited island", where they've spent their childhood's stifling echoes. The reason for this gathering isn't quite a normal one. Instead, there’s a recently-deceased shipmaster named Frieder Sunderemann in their line. Everyone in Bahrenhooop insists that they're blind to the situation, save for the lonely widow Greta Sunderemann, but she too just seems to have a handful of clues. Shattering questions still linger, in particular, about what Frieder had left behind; how his children are coping with it; who this enigmatic gray haired man is; what game the eldest is playing; and whom does the six-pointed quilt target — among others. Amidst the eerie twists and unexpected turns, readers are led astray to grasp the roots of fraught family dynamics and how they reconcile their mother's love and father's admiration long since lost.
