The story is about two people who are the epitome of the term protectors—Deborah, a witness in an unjust trial who needs Ashe's help, and Sam, an ex-agent who is determined to protect a girl named Jeannie from a maniac.
Ashe has been estranged from his family and is on the run from them after an accident led to the death of his mother. Although he's an awfully skilled assassin, he doesn't have the highest morals, and throughout the text he does his best to convince Deborah that he'd be the best person to protect her. Ashe tempts Deborah with love and cunning, not letting her know the true extent of his dark secrets until it's too late. Throughout their time together, she becomes smitten, but the reality sets in only after he gets her enrolled in the witness protection program.
Sam meanwhile is carrying the weight of protecting Jeannie as a weapon in the hands of a serial killer bent on exterminating the Alversons from this planet forever. He's reluctantly recruited by Jeannie as her own protector. What starts out as personal vendettas of revenge make way to a close connection between the four main characters who must defeat the ruthless antagonist behind this unexpected game of cat and mouse.
Keeping her safe, Ashe has never forgotten Debbie and the passionate night they shared, nor her father's cold disregard for him. Now, if Debbie is to survive the murder trial in which he's called as a witness, she needs him to guard her...but the best place for protection would be in his arms again.
