Arthur Schopenhaur's Essays of Arthur, 'Studies in Pessimisms', is his masterpiece, surely as an essayist and above all an impacter on the metaphysical tradition of continental philosophy, with Georges Bataille as the major resource. Strange though it may seem at this distance, Schopenhauerion essays teased virulence at the snobbery exhibited by German philosophers, who saw themselves as masters of the arts and sciences, and not suppliants, and were not very nice about those of other nations, including Frenchmen like Bataille, whom they treated as philistines and foreign to German culture.\nSchopenhauer was fully aware of his influence on Bataille. The latter's first text was published some years after Schopenhaueroe Essays ended, and later he wrote a letter to the latter in which he hails the former his mentor, giving expression to the admiration and love he had for him. Schopenhaur's own Works was translated into French by Lefebvre and Bataille in 1902, together with his Optics and The World as Will and Representation. Of all of Schopenhaguerion works, none animate Bataille's so much as that last mentioned, which is an aphoristic work, dated and riddled with quizcraft.
