The book takes place on country land in Kentucky where growing and selling hemp is legal. This is the main income for several residents of this area. But old man Coburn has a secret method of hemp and spends all his time developing new plant lines. The son of old Kopernikus decides to take over the company, and has some very practical methods as means of achieving his goal. Both these methods coexist in the novel, creating a strong mix of historical but also comic details. As a plot device, the hemp problem even gives Kainz something of a theme - alien culture encountering unfamiliar ideas. Here he spirals into an explorer of tradition, its institutions and their social (and economic) significance, even welcoming translation. It's a tip from Allen James "Lieutenant Solar" Lane - always invaluable for bringing critical distance to the grandest of novels.
