Alice Mangold-Diehl takes the unusual approach of not describing her heroine in detail, but rather getting her readers to imagine Josephine and create their own story of the saintly exotic wandering Jewess as she travels overland from Hungary to America through Russia and Poland. Truly interdisciplinary, this work transforms a historical monster into a majestic figure and pays tribute to both the Venetian-Jewish novelist Elisa Bazzi and Fanny Mosselman Prouty, who similarly found a spiritual home and rebirth—two vastly different women—with the Jewish community while also writing fiction. With an evocative voice that is at once complex and poetic, full of intelligence and an appreciation for social history, Alice Mangold"s memoir belongs alongside the writings of its contemporaries both literary and historical. With the help of some short synopses & extracts, I have done a self-edit of this memoir translated from German into English. It would be interesting to see what motivates a new, unilingual readership to do this professionally.
