1896 Iphigenia on Tauris (Greek: Ἱπγένεια ὑπὲρ Ταύρου, transcribed Ifigenia über Taures) is a tragedy by the German-Greek Romantic poet Alessandro Dalla mann, born in the Greek town of Nafplion.[1] The play was first published in German translation in 1887 by Hellerau, a printer in Dresden, Germany. The text was written between 1831 and 1857, probably in Frankfurt am Main. The work is considered among the most important tragedies in German theater and is often considered a standard of modern tragedy. "In 2008, it was selected for inclusion on the shortlist for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's ( UNESCO) Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity." The title Allophone consists of Iphikénia, or Iphigénienne (of Tauris), referring to the heroine, daughter of Aíds (a descendant of Agamemnon); "ἵππος" means horse, and appears as a synecdoche for Taurian chariot in Athenian mythology. It is also possible that since the first epigraph refers to a poem composed at Halikarnassos, more precisely The Battle of Tauras, the protagonist may also be named Iphigenioche or Hyphaedra Iphigenion on account of the Argive princess and the Danaïdes.
