“White Nights” by Fyodor Dostoyevsky is an important and influential novel. It was written as a series of short stories over the months in 1848, and later published as one complete piece.

The protagonist of the novel is a young man named Alexey, who lives in a small provincial city where his life is quiet but meaningless. One night during a trip to a workplace gathering, he has a sad conversation with Nikolay, a good friend of his who has been recently robbed by a servant, and this frustrates Alexey. Alexey, who had a childhood friend, whom he once loved passionately but she died when she was a child, seeks solace but all people around him are dull and discouraging to him, and nothing makes sense besides passing thoughts and moments that caress his soul. For his solitude he studies books about cosmism and the philosophy of religion, but finds it difficult to grasp them due to his lack of education. Furthermore, Alexey is concerned that he does not have the ability to love anybody or anything fully, which seems boring and hollow for him. While his desire of love burns in him still, Nikolay's departure in desperation, after hearing the sister of Nikolay insult Alexey (in front of her friends) that they are indeed only friends, turns into a force that pushes him to seek the solacious help that a soulmate can bring him. He lacks real love and friendship despite his profound necessity of them. Eventually, he meets a very beautiful but somehow distanced young woman by the name of Natasa, with whom he converses and interacts daily in her home with her sister. Both of their personalities suit and complement each other's, drawing him further and deeper into Naata's world. Some of the universal themes of the text are dichotomies of idealism, materialism, comfort, distance and obsession, intense emotional insecurity, and past and present tragedy, in combination with a dreamy urban landscape and the underscoring similarities to solitary Christian spirituality. “White Nights" makes the reader think about the unimportance of finding the perfect individual, as some ppl set expensively for the least of humanity and some seek a familiar face in the world full strangers.
