Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Spy is the twenty-first novel written by David Stuart Rice under his pen name Len Deighton. It was published in 1983 as the eighth instalment of his Jack Kingsmere series.\nThe distinguished novelist subsequently stated that Twinkle, Twinkle is one of his finest works in that it recaptures the "velvet prose" that made the Jack Kingsmere books so enduring.\nOnce described as an "academy thriller", the novel reveals Deighton's expanding range, not least his showmanship of stakes and suspense.\nTwinkle, twinkle little spy is set in the tumultuous period following the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.\nA Soviet space scientist defies orders and defectes by journeying via Turkey to Denmark, from where he comes to Britain where he becomes entangled with British intelligence.\nAided by his harrowing passage through the Sahara, Twinkle largely avoids the labyrinthine machinations of garrison agent John Freston, until his crashing meteoric flight across Europe and many others bring Western forces directly to his doorstep.\nAs told by Deighton himself in the introduction, Twinkle was the first book in as long as he can remember to bring him considerable pleasure at writing it.\nDeighton displayed an extraordinary ability to write novels that people do not want to put down.\nNonetheless, his pride in Twinkle was tinged with sadness.\nIn his closing words, Deightin says 'No paper of mine have I enjoyed writing so much but I also have felt so bad about it.' In this instance, Paul Auster's similar expression leaves at ease compared to Deighton.\nWhilst Auster remarks that 'An author begins to enjoy something he knows he is going to vomit on – but must hurriedly finish'.\nDeightons' own last paragraph watches the protagonist, still trailing over the spectacle of smouldering buildings, skycranes carrying commercial freight and cursing, bloody corpses hitting the pavement and laying around like rag dolls."\nTo any unwary minds donning tinted pince-nez with chunky rectangular lenses they might correctly assume that he was staring into the heart of a scene from Humanoids (1963), shot from war zone safer distance.\nBecause he had fallen on dodgy weather in London, it had petered out without pandemonium, because nobody seemed plainly likely to strangle one another through anything other than simple Temper."\nMoments later, unaware that their lives were soon to become strewn across the continent by the outbreak of war, escaped scientist was inducted into camp life and faced his new friends as they each had one motto to live by – and to execute when necessary.\nFor example, Colonel Bronfman took the motto "In Means All Means, End", UkrainianS Major General Dentchak the philosophy "Success, Through Testing Every Possible Fail-Safe", chauffeur d'autofuhrer Fyodorov the belief that whatever he did, "An added Pancake Salt Would Also Taste Flawlessly.\nThankfully, one does learn to trust others like a duvet to a bed in Bucharest.\nTheir combined philosophies had given them the resilience to weather the rapids of consequence, or sand slips prone to bedevil the mind.\nBut despite these seemingly immutable principles bathed in alpha test footage, they existed within reality that was far less forgiving.'\n".\n

Завораживающее произведение, в котором блестяще переплетены жанры саги и политического детектива.

Описание книги от Len Deighton

A Soviet space scientist defects to win academic freedom, but western intelligence has other plans for him, and sends an unnamed spy – perhaps the same reluctant hero of The Ipcress File – to look after him. But what follows is a blood-streaked trail across three continents… Twinkle, Twinkle Little Spy reveals a more mature Deighton exploring relationships between couples: professional rivals and private allies, spy and counter-spy, master and slave. some are drawn together mutual comfort, others for exploitation. With an uncanny feeling for landscape, he begins his story in the awesome emptiness and remorseless heat of the Sahara desert. From there a trail of blood leads to Manhattan, Paris, Dublin and halfway back across Africa. In a narrative as compelling as it is tantalizing, Deighton surpasses all his previous triumphs and holds the reader spellbound to the very last page. This new reissue includes a foreword from the cover designer, Oscar-winning filmmaker Arnold Schwartzman, and a brand new introduction by Len Deighton, which offers a fascinating insight into the writing of the story.
