Turning Angel is the second book in Greg Iles's New York Times bestselling Penn Cage series. It starts off just as promisingly as the brilliant first book, Rest Of Us Just Live, creepily enveloping us in a world where a high profile rape and resulting murder turns the world of small town religious fanatics upside down.
Written using a mix of interviews and period detail, Iles has created a truly challenging portrait of two criminal brothers, Danny and Lawrence, both working their way down the morally ambiguous paths that so many small town addiction survivors are obliged to take. And when seemingly innocuous investigative gleanings start to point Perry North (known locally as Penn Cage) and the reader toward an apparently evil conclusion, all the whilst completely enmeshed within the reality of south Mississippi in late 20th century very certainly leaves remarkably little to be guessed about.
Although sticking broadly to the characters laid out in Rest of Us Just Lives, Turning Angel injects new characters into the chase, pairing them with some intriguing new antagonists while keeping Penn's intense and conflicted relationship with his ex Natalie firmly at the centre. The weak links in this plot string appear early on in Iles' writing style, but amass in strength later on as the novel steadily plods towards its surprising climax. Knowing that Iles cleverly keeps some ambiguity in his writing to an extent all the way through, being coy as to how much the reader comes to realise is understandably frustrating but nevertheless entrenching.
There's an intense feeling of magnetism and dread woven into the narrative which permeates every page and which Iles succeeds in capturing beautifully. However, perhaps as a result of Iles focusing more on telling a coherent story rather than footnoting background info as prolifically as he did in Rest Of Us, there's definitely room for improvement here. While there's some wonderful imagery and metatextual asides, the finishing line feels quite abrupt and some puzzles may prove frustrating for readers.
