Teresa Southwick's The Wilders series is about the four doctors who work together at the fictional Walnut River Hospital. Each book is a standalone romance novel with a different background story for its protagonists.
"Falling for The M.D." focuses on dr Peter Wilder, who is the lone doctor running the hospital after his father's death. While he proudly fights to keep it independent from a conglomerate, he's battling a not-so-friendly takeover bid led by Bethany Holloway, the owner of an unrelated healthcare company.
Bethany is Tom Holloway's ex-girlfriend, and she has kept tabs on Peter since their youth, just waiting for Tom's estate to fail so she can gain control of all the valuable land surrounding the hospital. Animated by her need to see Tom and his family fail, Bethany manages to stir up trouble during a particularly vulnerable moment for Peter and his ailing mother, even blackmailing him with information about his past dating a young woman after Tom left her under mysterious circumstances.
So when she shows up on the day of the hospital board meeting with the proposal that hires a prominent orthopedic surgeon, Peter is both suspicious and unnerved, convinced both by heart and instinct that something's amiss. It isn't long before he discovers her true colors and publicly humiliates her. Bethany objects to Peter joining forces with a rival orthopedic specialist and attempts to sabotage her, but Peter has too much pride in Ella and the services they can provide to the community to let her get in his way anymore. We learn that Ella also has a passion for medicine early on in the story, though her advances in that regard are largely stymied because she feels constrained by her mother's timidity in admitting that she's never known her peace when discussing illness and treatment. In fact, she cleverly gets Ella to attend a lecture by dr Wilder via a kindhearted friend whose bulletin board includes notes that provide vital information on Ella's childhood health issues. From there, Ella slowly learns that ptosis and her unique family history don't disqualify her or her potential from doing what dr Wilder does best: saving lives. At first, when confronting her mother about wanting to overcome her fears and pursue medical school, Elle is face with resistance based primarily on her gender, which proves incredibly refreshing to me, portraying a doctor who actually cares about their patient. Eventually though Elle acts on her fierce desire to succeed like her idols Ella Wilder and Peter Wilder themselves – boldly taking risks liberating herself from the heavier hand of traditional home traditions, learning from her mistakes and growing into herself as a doctor. The romantic elements of "Falling for The M.D.", while small in volume (overall, it's more focused on Heartwarming than Scorching) gives us a well-rounded portrait of a complicated relationship wherein two initially opposed sides find common purpose and purpose in each other save the strong romantic tension. Throughout the book, we witness subtle hints of something deeper developing between the two doctors – possibly more than professional respect; Courtney is quickly sighted (and subtly alluded to) as a loving mother and partner who genuinely respects the responsiveness, skills and heart of Doctor David. Peter himself would often look longingly towards the dynamic between Ella and dr J d Sumner which in all likelihood represents one of two things: 1) Interesting whodunit mystery2) Incredibly well-calculated Felix Felicis subplot to the intriguing common threads connecting Ella, dr David, Bella and Peter.
