This stunning hardcover edition of H.G. Wells’s seminal classic--now celebrating its centennial anniversary—is clear English prose woven into the timeless terror of alien life on Earth.
The story takes place in November 1896 when a meteor appears over a rural field in Kent, England. Soon humanity is faced by an unprovoked invasion, capturing, then killing those they find. Standing alongside the inhabitants, the only survivor is the narrator, dr Richard Marsh. When él communication is lost with London the narrator attempts to make it to Southampton, arriving just after an immense Martian spaceship is destroyed on an empty London Malcolm. Even after this destruction the world remains in peril as famine spreads across the countryside, fueling the panic in the survivors. The narrative then alternates with descriptions of rescue efforts back home, scientific discoveries based on the alien debris as well as longer focus upon the characters interactions with their families who have become more paranoid than they once were, suspecting infected cynical survivors and come to eventually kill the eccentric dr Marsh in derain. Musings from various individuals living throughout Britain are also employed by Wells throughout the novel giving voice to the plight of those who remain in their home towns. Finally the text concludes with the devastating final chapters showing the impact the Martian’s attack has had on London as the death toll increases among the people and those being deported to Canada as laborers to rebuild the city.
