What makes the story all the more captivating is that Nena could have married the preferred suitor, Rafael Torres, whose very presence made her the hair stand up on the back of her neck. Then as now Nena ticks every social page, but that romantic flesh won’t lie down. She repels Rafael’s attentions until it’s revealed that she’s courted Ramón, who is wealthy, handsome if not amenable in manner. So Fee suggests why Ramón might wish a wife of convenience:
