They had won the war. London was at peace for the first time in more than a century, and with the dark windowless bunker in which the head of MI6's CI department, James Castlerigg, had take refuge being demolished the city was actually coming alive once again.

Except for one thing; the faint black smoke that still hung over London like a grim fairy-tale veil shrouding a castle oozing slowly away the decades long lingering shadow cast by the curse of so many before it. If there was anything England had been known for throughout the Twentieth century it was shadows, not real sunlight.

Beneath the evening's shimmering false serenity, some powerful force had sensed weakness. England under threat once again, and only the freshly trained younger officers under Castlerigg's mentorship stood between them and fall. And this was the man sent to observe.

Judging by her name spelt out in French on the papers neatly packed into her sports bag, she travelled a lot. She was statly affluent, attended high society functions when she did make it to the shores of England where noblemen would cater even more refined events, travelled the worlds long before Castlerigg was even thrust into his post. She had spent the better part of her life exploring the world's luxury haven, Monte Carlo like it is were just another day.

They had no idea what to expect of her though; whether she was genuine unaware of the UK's true capabilities or merely using the trip as an opportunity to scrutinize the establishment of modern Britain. Such questions marred the exasperating evidences she never seemed inclined to volunteering. She would nibble comfortably at their carefully laid out bedtime stories, taking in every single detail like it was a biographer sublimely harnessing moments and playing back to an uncertain audience who will never hear this as Jacques Szigetvari used to called it. Some curious puzzle piece indeed.

Our chorus of young officers was certainly determined to present her with as crystal clear a picture as possible. Truly more picturesque compared to what old salts like Castlerigg grilled themselves and their unsteady guess into believing, you'd think glorious military histories themselves truly commiserated the youthful enthusiasm of their culmination. However; there was still a certain adventurousness running through their veins courtesy of a little too much free time coupled with a healthy dose of either casual corruption or deliberate ignorance about current affairs in England. No matter which of them valued the chances provided with these elite assignments the thought of finally meeting hand in hand with psychologically flipped assassins beyond France's boundaries would certainly exacerbate a layer of naivety they long lost the lust for those were Western Europe kids.

A series of skilfully coordinated accidents of masterful misdirection prolonged the Charon's boat ride; until it met with one last docking. For days on end the mystifying little miss played the elements of New York City; phasing into an opera revue, then travelling across the streets to a sophisticated cafe, each moment seeming like an altogether different identity she displayed without ever really touching the brunt of that gaping abyss Castlerigg had faced from his lonely cradle in Cokethorn to the upper echelons of his spy drawer full of suspected shadows. After years of covert surveillance and conducting his own probes, pointing her blindfolded towards the credible site of ancient ancient history, he desperately demanded her view at the end of the stage.

And when the time came, there she was with an eerie gleam in her eyes tossing passionately refusing the hand extended to her waving a familiar folder bearing Francs Bacon's aged coat of arms. An eye for details like this.

Well, that's why you have you the late Night Hawk on your screen still lampooning the grateful nation. With friends like these nothing is impossible until she caresses it away much harder than it should be seen on this our viewing screen; in full bloom. And she got a contact on cheerful Monte, so Now you know.

Описание книги от Janice Law

Peace has come to England and the blackout is over, but the gloom has yet to lift from London. One night, leaving a gambling club where he has run up a considerable tab, the young painter Francis Bacon, accompanied by his lover, sees a man gunned down in the street. Soon afterward, Bacon receives a strange offer from the club owner: He will erase Bacon's debts if the painter delivers a package to the dead man's widow on the Riviera. What gambler could resist a trip to Monte Carlo? The Riviera may be lovely, but in 1945, its sun-drenched beaches can be just as dark as the back alleys of London.
