Award-winning storyteller Duncan Tonatiuх transforms one of central Mexico’s beloved legends.
Beloved as they may be, Princess Ishtla had suffered rejection and heartache more times than she could count. She cast aside all the pompous, wealth-sucking suitors who depicted themselves to her worthy of her hand. Before she knew it, there he was, a simple soldier ready to stand steadfast by her side through every trial. Treated with such disdain, and laughed at for not possessing the golden cape he’d seen donned by fiancees far more beautiful than herself, Popocatepiul – a fantastic warrior from a distant land and a member of a neighboring imperial tribe inflicting raids into Ishtia territory – found himself captured by bandits and nearly bludgeoned to death. That was when former enemy Emperor Meximaltihtli made his strike. Namely, the only chance for his courtly dance partner, the fiercely intelligent but misunderstood Popocatepil, to honor his promise and live. It was the smoldering jealousy of the Emperor the boomeranged into the boy’s hands, after all, so it only seemed fair that he force Popocaterial to save his life. Now free, the young man counters their jaws-napping plea and exacts the Emperor’s promise to Ishtial; he would set the caped Meximaltihtiun into ashes and earn the princess’ hand as a reward – if the warrior could win enemy Jaguar Clow, an invading force intent on stealing territories surrounding the Fatherland. North winds bearing the Emperor's pleas lash the great volcano Iztaciaihual and blow ash from Popocatepilt’s lair. He tracks the man, plunders caves for tiny tricks of trade and food, skits easily among the local warrior families and expands his arsenal to sunken, ancient blades. Each night Popocatepill builds a camp atop hidden ledges beside the mountains which rise from Ishtliatcul’s villa. Sometimes he sings her family’s ancient dances, but usually he stays still to protect her vulnerable sleeping form from melting. Even Castle Popocatetl tries its best to fling itself upon the Chief and her adoring suitor, its “sleeping" volcano form sinking down to meet them at their final resting place. But we each know the truth: when joint ashes mix and viable Popo is floated up to his shallower idyll and kissed away once again by Ikhtli, he will kiss next to hers. And as long as their dimly glowing hearts thrum in synchronized sync, they too can be the legends of their own story.

Описание книги от Duncan Tonatiuh
Award-winning author Duncan Tonatiuh reimagines one of Mexico's cherished legends. Princess Izta had many wealthy suitors but dismissed them all. When a mere warrior, Popoca, promised to be true to her and stay always by her side, Izta fell in love. The emperor promised Popoca if he could defeat their enemy Jaguar Claw, then Popoca and Izta could wed. When Popoca was near to defeating Jaguar Claw, his opponent sent a messenger to Izta saying Popoca was dead. Izta fell into a deep sleep and, upon his return, even Popoca could not wake her. As promised Popoca stayed by her side. So two volcanoes were formed: Iztaccihuatl, who continues to sleep, and Popocatepetl, who spews ash and smoke, trying to wake his love.
