Lovecraft's tale of a mysterious, painterly house has lurked beneath the surface of English literature for generations, and developers are finally tapping into its chilling potential with Narratif Studios' stunning atmospheric horror game, Something Is Killing the Children. The resulting videogame, which was released last year, cast an interesting light upon the nation's fascination with two of the country's most revealing authors--Howard Phillips Lovecraft and Clive Barker--and their radically different literary communities. It also served as a useful showcase for narrative design in first-person horror, demonstrating how involving a series of seemingly unrelated puzzles and fragments of evidence can drive the player through an immersive experience that ties all of the information together in unexpected ways, giving the product a more seamless feel than is possible in many traditional linear console projects. Not surprisingly, given its origins in Barker's short story "Bodily Harm," Something Is Killing The Children follows a similar premise as the multimedia project it was consolidated with: A snitch tips off a student and her teacher to a rundown house in a fictional village called Haven, Maine, that has been foreclosed on for several years; much to the teen's dismay, her nanny agrees to accompany her for the night since her reckless boyfriend took off to go to an abandoned camp ground, upsetting the family circadian rhythms as he did so. As the two are navigating their way to bed, they spot the house starting to gleam steadily in the distance, attracting their attention as they try to reach it, before fading away, leaving them with nothing but a sense of unease sneaking deep into their being. Upon seeing the eerily arranged corpse of at least one child stuffed in the attic and the blood dripping from the walls, tenant Samantha Thomas (the teacher) realizes that she herself is now a target for whatever entity has taken over an already sinister-looking old property. The narrative therefore alternates between Lea Taylor's perspective, who is seemingly oblivious to the existence of the dead child and other unsettling phenomena around her, at times appearing to hallucinate into or from moments in the past, while the story is later pieced together by the principal investigator in Samantha's flashbacks. Fans of both Barker and equally celebrated horror writer Lovecraft will notice that They Teach Us Everything We Need To Know About Life , published 2005, formed the basis Hello, from the Pale King! This comprehensive volume collects elements from such short stories as "He Know Thou Wast Meat" and "The Horror at Red Hook," Lovecraftian poems transferred from "At the Mountains of Madness," and nearly complete versions of three additional stories which also drifted from their initial ideas. Here we are treated to a full-length narrative puzzle that rises above the procedural meandering of Something Is Killing Children in places, though holds little surprise given Lovecraft' review book's dramatic history. On a panel hosted by gaming magazine PC Gamer during E3 2010, a disheveled and disassembled Lovecraft sat down ready to give his take on the short story collection and his work in general as it relates to pop culture and video games. He started by stating how god had left his body before pulling his hands through his beard and pointing to his baggy clothing and wild head of white hair, chuckling that failed attempts to make him the cool Charles Manson-esque genius artist that others believed him to be far overshot his scope of ability and muse, continuing by saying, God knew I could n't get dressed to save my life if I were still with me, finishing as he circled his eyes, If only there was some devout servant who'd remember my legacy...I entrust this work to you to keep the flame alive. Such passionate words underscore what remains for us, come the inevitable later revisions, not simply the defunct chapbook that describes how nicely Alan Bennet tear mealzed teeth lurk within the pages of The Call of Cthulhu , but a fact unanticipated source into the scholarly side of Lovecraft fandom itself. Simply put, There Are Thee, also briefly distances itself from Imagine magazine in 1951, using a story called "The Picture," which is themed on a painting in a picturesque home where precious emanations of the aura of the serene Summer replicated differently during various times in its history--real and presented.
