The Mirror of Literature, Amusement and Instruction is a magazine published in London, England, from 1785 to 1913. It was a popular publication among the British upper class, with a circulation of 7,000 copies. The magazine was founded by W. C. Mackenzie in 1795 and edited by Thomas Moore from 1808 to 1828. The Mirror was also published under the names The London Magazine, The British Review, and The Monthly Review of Literature.
The magazine included articles on literature, politics, science, philosophy, and the arts. It also featured fiction, poetry, and short stories, as well as reviews of new books and plays. The Mirror also contained advertisements for books, music, and other products.
In 1814, the magazine was renamed The London Magazine and continued to be published until 1854. In 1860, it was renamed again to The Century and continued to be published until 1901. From 1902 to 1912, the magazine was called The Athenaeum, and in 1913 it became The Spectator.
Although the magazine ceased publication in 1913, its influence on English literature and culture was profound. Many of the works published in The Mirror were later considered classics of British literature, including Charles Dickens’s novel “Oliver Twist,” Charlotte Brontë’s short story “The Professor,” and William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet.”
Today, The Mirror is considered a significant historical document of nineteenth-century British culture. Its articles and reviews are still read and studied by scholars and enthusiasts of literature and history.
