The Mediated Construction of Reality offers an innovative way of conceptualising reality and identity by critically reviewing the range of theories that have developed alongside the advent and extensive use of communications technology. It engages with three key questions: 1) "The Everyday Life of Data", considering how everyday communication and information practices reduce meaning and content to forms of data; 2) "Other People": reflecting on the extent to which our interactions with people in everyday life are mediated through digital technologies; and 3) "Invisible Politics": examining how communications manifest economic, political and cultural forces. This reader broke wonderful insights into the multitude of ways in which digital technologies and social networks are shaping our experiences, mindsets, and communities. The authors present a categorisation of these ways which provides a valuable framework for future research to identify and assess the influence of social technologies, as well as points towards possible new avenues for research in the overarching field of communications studies. Furthermore, the book’s central thesis — that interactions between people and technologies are becoming increasingly integrated in contemporary culture — has the potential to challenge classical perspectives on sociology, communication, and media influence. The timeless themes, such as democracy, surveillance, privacy and power allocation, explored in Couldry’s work, will be particularly engaging for scholars coming to understand, analyse, and teach the post-media age.

Nick Couldry
Social theory needs to be completely rethought in a world of digital media and social media platforms driven by data processes. Fifty years after Berger and Luckmann published their classic text The Social Construction of Reality, two leading sociologists of media, Nick Couldry and Andreas Hepp, revisit the question of how social theory can understand the processes through which an everyday world is constructed in and through media. Drawing on Schütz, Elias and many other social and media theorists, they ask: what are the implications of digital media's profound involvement in those processes? Is the result a social world that is stable and liveable, or one that is increasingly unstable and unliveable?
